It’s a tale of two coasts, as an unusual weather pattern will bring opposite extremes with a heatwave to the West and well below normal temperatures to the east that will result in snow accumulation; plus, today’s weather forecast.
Weather pattern setting up opposite extremes
To the East, temperatures will begin dropping, and on Wednesday the Appalachians should see a few snowflakes.
But by the end of the week, beginning on Friday, the first of two, possibly three cold fronts will dip down from Canada bringing out of season conditions for a significant portion of the eastern US.
Locations west of the Plains and north of the Mid-South will experience temperatures 15-25 degrees Fahrenheit below normal.
The unusual lows will trigger frost and freeze warnings, as well as bring snow accumulation around the Great Lakes and the interior Northeast.
For the West, it’s going to be the opposite story, as temperatures will begin to climb with many areas having a 70 percent probability of above-average temperatures.
For the first part of the week, the Southwest will see triple-digit heat while portions of the Deep South will see temperatures in the 90s.
In the Central US, these opposite weather patterns will clash on Wednesday bringing severe weather.
2 possible severe weather outbreaks this week
The National Weather Service (NWS) is forecasting two outbreaks of severe weather this week.
The first is on Tuesday where the NWS is forecasting severe thunderstorms over portions of eastern Tennessee, Northeast Alabama, northern Georgia, northern and northwest South Carolina, and Western and Southwest North Carolina.
A second outbreak of severe weather is forecast by the NWS over the central US on Thursday affecting north-central Texas and Southwestern Oklahoma.
The NWS is also forecasting heavy rain bring in the potential for flash flooding over southern Oklahoma.
