The National Weather Service has canceled all tornado watches as severe weather begins to move out of the southeast where tornadoes turned deadly and left a trail of destruction, however, high winds will remain a danger for the eastern US today under wind advisories; plus, more of today’s weather news and forecast.
Wind advisories remain in effect in Eastern US, tornado warnings expired
The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued across the eastern coastline including Northeast Florida, Southeast Georgia, throughout the Carolinas, Virginia, New Jersey, Delaware; southeastern, central and southern Pennsylvania; Eastern New York and Western New England area; Boston and surrounding area.
As the severe weather is moving out of the southeast, the NWS has canceled all tornado watches and warnings.
Violent and severe weather leaves death and destruction
Severe weather left a trail of destruction from the South Central US to the Southeast, with rounds of heavy rainfall, flooding, violent thunderstorms and tornadoes which ransacked a number of states for three days, Wednesday through Friday.
Tornado damage, deaths, flooding
Severe weather left over 200,000 residents from Florida to Virginia without power yesterday.
Multiple confirmed tornadoes were on the ground in the Carolinas yesterday and there were also reports of flooding. Several people were rescued after being trapped in the basement of a doctor’s office in Charlotte.
Floodwaters collapsed a bridge in Grover, North Carolina.
A state of emergency was declared in Virginia yesterday due to flooding in the southwestern portion of the state.
A tornado in Simpson County, Mississippi took down power lines, trees, and damaged structures. Tornadoes were also reported in the counties of Smith, Yazoo, Holmes, Leake, and Jasper, Mississippi.
Officials in Florida are still confirming if tornadoes touched down there. However, severe weather toppled trees, injuring one person and leaving several others trapped in a home.
Two people died following severe weather in the Carolinas on Thursday. One person died when a tree fell on a car in York County, while another died in Gaston County when their vehicle hydroplaned.
Three homes were damaged by a tornado in Cabarrus County.
Over the next few days, the NWS will be further examining the damage that occurred in several states to determine whether or not the destruction was the result of a tornado.
