Winter is far from over, as a cold front is bringing plunging temperatures, snow, and icy rain across the nation – find out if winter weather is coming your way; plus, more of today’s weather news and forecast.
Snow and icy rain across northern and eastern US
Over the next three days, parts of the northern and eastern US will continue to experience winter-like conditions dealing with frigid temperatures, snow, and icy rain.
Winter weather will span from Minnesota to New England states and Maine in the north, while mixed precipitation will extend as far south as Georgia.
Today, snow is in the forecast for portions of southern Wyoming; northern and central Colorado; western South Dakota and Nebraska; northern Wisconsin and northeastern Minnesota; most of Michigan; the majority of Illinois; western and central Montana, northern and central Indiana; and Northwestern Ohio.
Winter storm warnings and winter weather advisories today
A winter storm warning has been issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) for Western New York near Buffalo, central and northern New Hampshire, and the majority of Maine.
The NWS has also issued a winter weather advisory for eastern Missouri, west-central Illinois, central and east-central Illinois, northeastern Illinois, northwestern Indiana, northern Indiana, northwest Ohio, southwestern and southeastern Michigan, central Pennsylvania, western Pennsylvania, east central Ohio, extreme western Maryland, eastern New York, western New England areas, New Hampshire, southern Maine, eastern West Virginia and along the Tennessee-North Carolina border.
Ice storms and a wintry mix
Ice storms are forecast today along the New York-Pennsylvania border, as well as in portions of upstate New York, Vermont, and New Hampshire.
A path of mix precipitation will extend from southern Illinois, through Kentucky and Tennessee and into northern Atlanta to the south, while spanning northeast all the way to Maine.
Rain and thunderstorms for the south, east
Nearly the entirety of the southeastern and eastern coastal states will see rain and thunderstorms today spanning from Florida to Massachusetts.
Thunderstorms will affect nearly the entirety of Florida, Georgia, the Carolinas, Virginia, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, as well as portions of Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, New York, and Massachusetts.
Plunging temperatures
Even some of the warmest places in the nation will see plunging temperatures as a cold front moves in over the next three days.
In Florida, between now and the weekend, temperatures are expected to plummet from the mid-80s by 40 degrees into the upper 40s by the weekend.
Southern California will see a forecasted inland heatwave bring temperatures up to 86 in Anaheim and 85 in Los Angeles tomorrow, but then will see temperatures plunge afterward by as much as 25 degrees.
